An honest review of Hesh Law.

A few weeks back i watched the new Creature video "hesh law" at the skatepark in skegness. At the time i didn't really enjoy it too much, maybe because i had to look up at the screen on the wall and i couldn't see much and the music was kinda distorted. Also there was no Stu Graham part, Cody Boat part or Alex Horn part, which sucks. Although the experience was negative I thought fuck it, i'll get a copy and watch it maybe its not that bad? And not only the standard copy but the supa-dupa deluxe Booklet DVD with an extra disc thats gotta be crammed with bonuses right, right?

Well to start with the bonus DVD is a let down. I guarantee that two of the features will appear on the Strange notes website within a few months, these features being Al partanans reedited part and the Blood Shed. Because Blood Shed contains scenes of mild violence, drug use and overuse of the words "fuck" and "bitches" this warrants the DVD a parental guidance sticker, another misleading tag that is probably just there to make this DVD look better than it really is. Another thing is us folks in Barrow ain't to keen on Al so for me to pay extra for this dvd because partanananana has a extra three minutes is an insult. The best bit about his part is his fullpipe slam at the beginning. The final bit of extra footage is Navs "butt country 2", where nav films some female derrieres. That's kinda cool but again doesn't warrant the extra cost for this bonus DVD.

"But Steve," i hear you cry, "Surely its not about the extras, but the main feature. Thats gotta be gnar buckets right?" and to be fair the creature team does deliver some gnarly skating with a whole host of new team riders with their unique take o...oh wait a minute. It seems the heads at creature have kicked off some members eg Josh perkins and Potter and replaced them with people who skate exactly the same aka short clips of rails and gaps. Boring. This isn't 2001 guys, lets see some creativity. Whats worse it seems all the street guys get full parts of the same crud, rail, rail, gap, line with rail, partying, rail. Truman hooker is the first street part and with a name like that i'm sure he was bullied in school, because he certainly is a true Man Hooker skating to the sonics cause they're cool now, even though this song was used earlier in the year by the guys at Bacon and Lowcard in their epic video "mall grab". Another part that really got my goat was devin appellos. Sure massive gaps are pretty gnarly but its also pretty boring and by christ who choose the music? Sounds like darth vaders voice box malfunctioned as he got up at kareoke to sing his rendition of Queen. Theres loads more street parts but i can't be arsed going through. Even Gravette let me down and I like how he skates.

When i hear creature i immediatly think of the transition riders in their team. They're there but they have montages instead of parts. Like i said i was really looking forward to a Stu Graham part but he has four tricks in the credits! Couldn't they figure out pal to ntsc conversion? I was also keen on an Alex horn, Heddings and Cody Boat part but again they only have about 4-5 tricks in the entire video! You're mostly subjected to Navs, Hitz and Partanan. As the saying goes two outa three aint bad, actually no Navs was a prick when i met him so its just one outa three, but then NHS ruin it again with gay edits. I was fucking Hyped that creature were gunna have footage from japan but half of its slow-mo and the only japanese rider is maru. Where were the felem guys? Scared they rip harder than you and don't give a fuck if they receive coverage or not? the best trick in that whole part was marus' back tail in Mikasa, the rest was average at best from a professional american team. Throughout their parts it seems like they were too busy focusing on their look than actually skating. "Oh hey we're hesh, look at my fashionable ripped king diamond tee and Nikes." "Killer dude, but check out my sunnies that i',m wearing INDOOR! Yeah take that conformity, we're so hesh, pass me the champers". Even the vert section pissed me off.

Now for a couple of good points. First of all they have included a BA:KU section. Its only short but it's easily my favorite part of the video. Deer man of Dark Woods does some ridiculous shit on the barriers such as nollie shuvs to piv fakie, a sick backside air and a ridiculous kickflip and the Beast of gervaduaduauduauudanan (aka that beardy bloke from almost) does a couple of daft tings. Theres also a cool vert bowl edit and the pool edit is more like a friends section so thats pretty good. They end the video in South America which was pretty cool as the spots look haggard, old and interesting. Still, it ain't much.

So there you have it. Overall it is watachable, but ifs definatly no where near as good as "born dead" and that fucker was free! I guess the casing is pretty jazzy as it looks like a hard backed book and has a cool photo of Hewitt looking like an old man in the free booklet inside. Definatly not worth the asking price, but if you are gunna get it get it from a Skater owned shop. I think they just over hyped it far to much and i felt really let down. More sick skating next time and less arty farty shit please, you are not alien workshop.

Cumbrian Crusties

So i'm back in barrow for christmas, heres a quick barrovian bit of trivia for ye, today is black eye friday. thats the friday before christmas that everyone goes out to cornwallis street (aka the gaza strip) where all the shitty nightclubs are to get drunk and get into fights. Brilliant eh? Thats why i'm sat ere with a brew waiting for a hot bath.

Got me a DVD from That There Bob named "loving the hate". s'about 12 minutes long with some sick footage from all me mates in Bristol. Also it has the most street skateboarding footage of me ever and some melon footage! cheers bob, please visit me soon!

Other than that Heathen Skateboards have finally released a web edit of the Holy Mountain tour. Really sick stuff, wish i could have stayed on the tour a bit longer but i'm still stoked i got to skate the chellaston ramp.

Oh and Check out this Japanese Blog. Look at that bowl eh? Brick coping, fucking proper. My new years resolution is to get something built or goto every skatepark and rip out the metal coping and replace it with brick or crete coping. But not sandstone coping, thats a bad choice. Geology Bitch.

Gettin a camera for christmas, so expect some proper blog action soon.

To everyone, Merry christmas and have a Productive and enjoyable new year!

Questions

My good friend Craig Scott AKA Questions sent me this rad tee through the post. He also included some sick stickers and zines, what a hero. Craig has one of the funnest styles of skating and is super down to shred. He also scribbles some mega rad shizz for RoadKill and Lovenskate . Pretty stoked as one of the zines is the injury issue and has some great recovery tips. Cheers Craig!
